If you are looking for a cheap flight from New York to Moscow, it is worthwhile to spend an extra ten or fifteen minutes shopping around to find the lowest fares.
There are countless travel websites out there to book your flight, but whenever possible, it is always the safest way is to book directly with the airline.
Let’s start looking at the different options online to get the best air fare on flights from New York to Moscow, Russia.
There are only two airlines fly nonstop from New York to Moscow: Aeroflot and Delta. Both airlines fly from JFK airport in NYC to Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow.
One of these nonstop flights will often be the cheapest option on this route, but occasionally you may save money by flying through a large hub in Europe such as Paris, Frankfurt, Helsinki, London, Rome and etc.
Where to Start?
The best website to check out first is ITA. What makes this site unique is that you cannot purchase your ticket through ITA; it is only a search tool to find the cheapest flights on the dates that you want to fly. Once you find the flight that you want, you can go directly to the airline’s website to make a purchase or book a flight through one of the agencies.
ITA is an excellent resource if you are flexible in terms of dates of travel and alternate origin and destination airports. Moscow, for instance, has three airports, Sheremetyevo (SVO), Domodedovo (DME), and Vnukovo (VKO). In order to help you find the cheapest fares, ITA allows you to provide a range of specific dates, or a calendar of dates for a specified number of days and nights. Make sure to deselect the “allow airport changes” box, unless you are willing to do so (it is usually very inconvenient).
Sometimes ITA will give you an itinerary that has multiple airlines. Sometimes it is the best way to save money for longer trips or last-minute travel – non-stop flights not always the cheapest option. In this case, check the website of one or two of the airlines indicated. However, you may need to use an agency to book these low fares from NY to Moscow. Keep in mind that if you book a flight with one of the agencies, they may impose additional restrictions or fees, and you can only deal with the agency to make any changes to your ticket. Booking a flight directly with the airline means that they will always be able to help you with changes, seat assignments, special requests, and so forth.
Note that airlines will always charge a hefty fee if you want to change your flight.
Let’s give you an example of how to use ITA to find a cheap flights from New York to Moscow. It is March, 2 of 2016 (the date when I am writing this) and I’ll be looking to fly from New York to Moscow for around 2 weeks in May-beginning of June. It’s perfect time to look for a flight, like 2-3 months in advance.
Above is a screenshot of a search for a round trip flight from New York to Moscow on ITA. I have a flexible schedule and that’s why I picked “See calendar of lowest fares” instead of “Search exact dates”. As a day of departure I choose May, 11 and length of stay is 14 nights (most tourists travel to Russia for 2-3 weeks).
As you can see, the cheapest dates to fly are with the departure on May, 17 to May, 31 – only for $516. It is an awesome price! Departure from NYC on May, 17 will work for me and that’s why I’ll be looking at this exact date.
Both of the flights are non-stop by Aeroflot Airlines! Awesome deal! As you can see on the screenshot, flights of the other airlines for these days are more expensive and they are also not non-stop.
We can’t do much more on ITA’s website, because they don’t sell tickets. But we did find here the cheapest round trip flight from NYC to Moscow for only $516. Let’s move on now to actually try to find where to buy this flight. I’ll check Aeroflot’s website first.
Both of the flights on May, 17 to Moscow and on June, 1 back to New York are on for pretty much the same price as they were found on ITA. On Aeroflot’s website the total price is 516.56 USD.
It’s a great price – I can just buy this flight directly on Aeroflot’s website, but let’s just see and give a chance to few agencies/travel search engines, such as Kayak, Expedia and Skyscanner. Let’s see if I’ll be able to find anything cheaper than 516.56 USD. First, I’ll look on Kayak.
$493 is the cheapest for the same Aeroflot’s nonstop flight!
Very interesting, on Expedia I found even cheaper flight for $454.72 with Air France. It’s weird, but on ITA this flight is showing for $603. I guess, ITA is not always finds all the best flights and there are a reason to always double check other websites. This flight have 1 connection on the way there and back, but IT IS CHEAPER.
Skyscanner also found Air France flight for the same money.
In conclusion I would like to say, that when you are looking for a cheap flight from New York to Moscow, the best you can do is to check and compare the prices on different websites.
