Russia is a popular destination for business and tourism, every year more and more people visit this unique country. When you are planning your trip to Russia one of the highest expenses will be getting a flight and that’s why I think it’s smart to try to get your airline tickets for a cheaper price.
In this travel guide, I’ll tell you some specifics of getting flights to and within Russia, information about airlines, and how to get cheap flights to Russia.
What Time of the Year is the Cheapest to Fly to Russia?
It is a good question because flight prices are different depending on the time of the year. High tourist season in Russia with higher airfare prices go from May to September.
Also, keep in mind that flights around the holiday times are more expensive too. For example, during such holidays like New Year (end of December), Day of Victory on May, 9 and etc.
As you can see below, a round trip flight from New York to Moscow during the dates from December, 1 – December, 15 would be cheaper, than the same one from December, 22 to January, 5 (after New Year).
The more chances to get cheapest flights to Russia is during this months: October – November, January, and March – April.
Don’t miss the opportunity to visit Russia during this time of the year and save some money.
Just don’t forget to bring with you some warm clothes, you know how cold it can get there, right?!
How Much Does it Cost to Fly to Russia?
Let’s move on to the next chapter and figure out how much does it cost to fly to Russia.
Definitely, the price will depend on the destination you are flying from (I mean distance between two destinations): flights from Europe will be cheaper, then the ones from the US or Asia.
Also, the cost of your flight ticket will depend on getting it for a regular fare or during a special flight deal. Pretty much all the airlines time to time have their special offers to different destinations. They are kind of random and you just need to check if there are any offers out there for the moment when you’re buying your ticket.
The best way will be to keep an eye on the flight deals, for example, you can do it using Jetradar flights search engine in the “Deals” section.
Overall, I would say that flights to Russia have pretty much the same prices as the flights to other destinations in Europe.
The cheapest way to get to Russia is to fly to Moscow: flights to St. Petersburg and the other cities in Russia usually are more expensive. Moscow is the main hub in Russia – 3 Moscow airports served more than 70 million passengers during the year in 2013.
Flying to Russia from the US
First off, let’s see all the non-stop flights that connect Russia and US;
- from New York to Moscow – Aeroflot-Russian airlines and Delta have direct flights on this route. I have experience flying from New York to Moscow with both Aeroflot and Delta.
With the identical price, I would prefer Aeroflot’s flight over Delta’s, because of the newer plane with better entertainment system onboard (personally for me it is important to have something to do during the long flights). But if you are a Delta SkyMiles member, then, probably, it would make more sense to choose a Delta flight.
Usually non-stop stop round-trip flights from New York to Moscow in Economy class will cost you $600-$700. During the special offer’s it is possible to get the same flight for as cheap as like $500 (if you’ll get really lucky). Non-stop flights between New York and Moscow are approx. 9 hours long – depending on the type of plane.
- from Miami to Moscow – only Aeroflot have direct flights between Miami and Moscow. These flights are not daily – Aeroflot operates non-stop flights on this route on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Ticket prices for a round trip flight Miami – Moscow – Miami in Economy class usually are in the $800-$900 range.
Interesting fact, but cheapest time to fly on this route is in March.
- from Los Angeles to Moscow – only Aeroflot operate non-stop flights between LA and Moscow. Aeroflot fly on this route every day except Tuesday. Ticket prices are normally starting from $800 for a round trip flight in Economy class. Flight duration time from LA to Moscow is approximately 13 hours.
- from Washington to Moscow – only Aeroflot operates direct flights 2 times a week (on Monday and Thursday) between two capitals. Approx. duration flight time is 9 hours and 40 minutes and Economy class round trip tickets prices start from $800.
You’ll have a lot more options if you will be looking for flights to Russia with connections. Pretty much all the large European airlines are operating flights to the US from their hubs, such as Amsterdam (KLM), London (British Airways), Frankfurt (Lufthansa), Helsinki (Finnair), LOT (Warsaw), Rome (Alitalia), Istanbul (Turkish Airlines) and etc.
I have experience of flying from the US to Russia with Air Berlin (Fort-Myers – Berlin – Moscow), Air France (Miami – Paris – Moscow), Iberia Airlines (Chicago – Madrid – Moscow), Finnair (Chicago – Helsinki – Moscow) and Alitalia (Chicago – Rome – Moscow).
Flights with connections are usually a little bit cheaper than non-stop, but the final decision what flight to choose is always up to you and your preferences.
For example, I will prefer a flight with a reasonable connection (no more than 3 hours) over non-stop flights if it will save me more, then $50.
Flying to Russia from Europe
Most of the time you will have a lot of options if you are looking for flights to Russia from destinations in Europe. To save more money on the flight I can give you a few tips.
First, check if it’s possible to fly with Easyjet. This low-cost airline operates non-stop flights to Moscow from London and Manchester. Easyjet flights might be dirt cheap.
For example, just now I found a round trip flight London – Moscow – London for only $90!
Not bad, huh?!
But keep in mind, that Easyjet is really strict with their baggage rules and they allow for free ONLY 1 CABIN BAG. And they’ll try to charge you more if they get a chance :).
Another trick how to get a cheaper flight to Russia might be used by those who are planning on going to St. Petersburg: you can fly to one of the airports in Finland and from there take a bus or rent a car/drive to St. Petersburg.
The distance between Helsinki and Saint Petersburg is around 400 km.
The reason I mentioned this option is because another low-cost airline Ryanair operates flights to the Lappeenranta airport in Finland, and from there you can easily get to St. Petersburg in about 4-5 hours.
Ryanair is famous for their really cheap flights.
