Recently, it has seemed that the start of the winter Olympics in Sochi is so far away from us. But now with the new 2014 year coming in, it means the Sochi games are just within reach. Before we get to the main theme of the post, I’ll tell you a few facts about the Olympics in Sochi. The application for the Sochi games was awarded in 2007, since then the country started to work hard with the sports facilities and infrastructure. Russian winter Olympics is unique in that sense that Sochi is located on the Black Sea coast and its one of the most popular summer resorts in Russia. Maybe now, after the games, Sochi will turn into a massive resort and for winter holidays too.
Moving on for those who are looking for the schedule and the dates of when the Olympics in Sochi start. The opening of the XXII Winter Olympic Games will be held on February 7, 2014 and the competitions will last until February 23. The most prestigious medals in the games will be played on February 23 – the closing day. On that day, four men will compete for medals in bobsledding and men skiers 50 km marathon. Also, on February 23 will be the final game in the Olympic hockey tournament. In total the Sochi Games will award 98 sets of medals . Each medal on the front side has the image of Olympic rings and on the back side the official logo “Sochi- 2014” and the view of competitive Olympic program.
Since the Vancouver 2010 Olympic games, some events have been added such as women’s ski jumping, team competitions in figure skating, luge team relay, freestyle halfpipe (men and women), biathlon mixed relay, freestyle slopestyle (men and women), snowboard slopestyle (men and women), team parallel special slalom snowboarding (men and women).
Russian Winter Olympics will be held in two areas. At the ski resort Krasnaya Polyana (less then 25 miles or 40 km from Sochi) competitions are held under the open sky: such as biathlon, bobsled, skiing, etc. In the Olympic Park at the Sochi competition held indoors, there was built 5 arenas for events such as hockey, speed skating, figure skating and curling . Opening of the Olympics will be held at the Olympic Stadium called “Fischt “, which seats up to 40,000 spectators.
