Every crown has a jewel that is more beautiful than all the other jewels. Every country has a city that altogether represents the beauty of the nation. For the Crimean Peninsula, that region or city is the city of Alupka. Set along the southern coast of Crimea, this city is along a stretch of cities that are famous sea side resorts in their own right. Yet Alupka manages to hold its own charm and is well known for its quaint beauty and peaceful ambiance. Here in this post you will be shown at some of the things that you can do while vacationing in the wonderful sea resort of Alupka in Crimea.
The Vorontsov Palace
Even if the whole of Alupka were condensed into this palace, it would still be worth a visit. A grand and baroque creation that should be visited at least once in a lifetime, it is a mix of various forms of architecture and styles. A vision in stone, the interiors are even more sumptuous with every furnishing and accessory made and crafted to perfection. This historic castle was built for Prince Mikhail Vorontsov as his summer residence. The frequent parties and galas that were hosted here saw the who’s who of Russian aristocracy in attendance.
In fact the opulence of the palace affected the guests so much that suddenly everyone was trying to build a summer palace in the nearby areas. The styles incorporated in the palace structure range from traditional English to Islamic to Byzantine and even Asian influences. Though these may seem to be at odds with each other, they were incorporated in a seamless fashion and come together to form a visual treat. The English would recognise it as the residence of Winston Churchill during the Yalta Conference after the Second World War.
The Vorontsov Grounds
As if the palace weren’t enough to woo visitors and guests alike, the Prince Mikhail also commissioned the construction of a vast garden. The garden was filled with trees and plants from countries as far as East Asia and the Americas.
Surprisingly, of the many original flowering plants that were imported more than 200 species still survive to date, a testament to the intricate planning and delicate care that has been showered on these grounds. The grounds contain vast pavilions, wonderful walkways and well-manicured trees and shrubs.
It could easily take a whole day for a person to walk through the grounds and absorb all the natural beauty that is on offer here. Another highlight of the gardens are the while lion statues sculpted by the Italian Giovanni Bonnani. Each pair of these legendary lions is in a different pose and were very much liked by the Churchill during his brief stay here.
The Ai-Petri Mountain
One of the tallest rock formations in the region, the Ai-Petri Mountain is sure to take your breath away. The mountain stands very near the coast and thus offers some amazing views of the sea. A cable car ride up to the mountain is the best way to enjoy the view.
Alupka resort is one of the jewels of Crimea. The Vorontsov Palace and its adjoining grounds are grand constructions which are definitely worth a visit and for sure one of the main things to do in Alupka. The mountain of Ai-Petri offers an excellent view of the sea. Enjoy your trip to Crimea, my friends, and have lot’s of fun!
