Hi friends, are you guys ready to pack your bags to travel to the World Cup in Russia?
A lot of you that are going to visit Russia this summer may be interested in what will the weather be like out there and what clothes you should bring for the 2018 World Cup trip.
In this article, I’ll give you a detailed information and answer to all of your questions on this topic.
It will be warm during the 2018 World Cup
When people think of Russia the very first association that comes to their mind
besides vodka is snow and extremely cold temperatures.
Well, the weather is pretty rough in Russia most of the year but summers are usually nice and warm. The 2018 World Cup is happening from June 14 to July 15 and speaking of weather, it is one of the best times to visit Russia.
Another thing I have to point out is that Russia is a very big country and the weather will vary depending on the location.
For example, one of the host cities Sochi has a subtropical climate, it is located on the Black Sea and it is a popular beach destination in the summer. On the other hand, there is Saint Petersburg which is located more than a thousand miles north of Sochi – obviously, it’s going to be cooler there.
Let’s take a closer look at the location of each of the 11 host cities and their average temperature in June and July.
An average high temperature in June +22 C (72 F);
An average high temperature in July +20 C (68 F);
During the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the weather in Moscow is expected to be in the mid 70-80’s F in the day. It gets pretty hot during the day and cools off in the evening and at night (you can expect as cold as 50’s F at night).
Last year in June, the highest temperature in Moscow was +27 C (80 F) on June 30th.
Also, last June and July in Moscow were quite rainy so there is a possibility it might rain a lot this year as well.
- St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg is located to the northwest from Moscow on the Baltic Sea shore.
In general, St. Petersburg is a little bit cooler than Moscow and windier. The weather during the World Cup should be comfortably warm – about +20 C or 70 F.
A very good sign is that last year in June-July it barely rained in St. Petersburg. Let’s hope the rain will stay away from the World Cup fans as well.
If you are going to visit the city, take a look at my St. Petersburg World Cup guide.
Like I already mentioned earlier, Sochi is a resort city located on the Black Sea coast. It is the most popular and visited beach destination in Russia. It might sound crazy, but in the winter Sochi is one of the most popular Russian ski resorts as well.
The high-touristy season in Sochi is starting in the middle of June and goes until September – it’s time when it’s nice out and the water is comfortable to swim. So if you will be in Sochi during the FIFA’s tournament, you should definitely save some time for a day at the beach. I also recommend you to check out my other post on things to do in Russia during the World Cup.
- Saransk & Nizhniy Novgorod & Kazan & Samara & Yekaterinburg
The weather in all these cities is going to be pretty similar to Moscow. You can expect temperatures in the day 15-25 Celsius, 10 to 15 Celsius at night.
Yekaterinburg is the farthest from Moscow World Cup host city located 1667 km (over 1000 miles) to the east. Despite its location almost in Siberia, summers there still warm. Last year, the highest temperature in June and July there was +26 C (78 F) with an average high about +20 C (68 F).
- Volgograd & Rostov on Don
Volgograd and Rostov are located in southern Russia closer to Sochi. Here we can expect some of the highest temperatures during 2018 World Cup with an average high of +26-29 C (80’s F, sometimes 90’s on the sun).
It normally rains quite a lot in Volgograd but the end of June and July in Rostov on Don are usually dry and sunny.
Kaliningrad is the westernmost point of Russia located on the Baltic Sea between Poland and Lithuania.
The weather here is often similar to St. Petersburg (as both cities are located in the Baltic region): 70’s F sometimes 80’s F in the day with plenty of sunshine mixed with heavy rain.
What clothes to bring to the World Cup in Russia?
You probably figured that you won’t need any heavy winter clothing for a trip to 2018 World Cup. The coldest it will be in Russia is probably about +10 C or 50 F at night.
So I recommend you to only bring a light jacket to wear for when it’s chilly out late at night or early in the mornings. Most of the time, it will be warm or even hot during the day so make sure to mostly bring summer clothes: light pants, shorts, t-shirts, dresses for ladies and etc.
If you will be visiting Sochi and Rostov on Don and planning on going to the beach, don’t forget to pack some swimming clothes, sunscreen, and sunglasses.
Also, it will rain at some point while you are in Russia so umbrellas are must have on sightseeing days. Keep in mind, umbrellas are not allowed at the stadium and if it’s going to rain during the match, your best bet is to wear a rain poncho.
