Name a couple of things that Russia is known for and there’s a good chance that you’ll say –
vodka, bears, and communism.
I mean, we see it a lot in movies and TV shows even these days. Those dang Russian communists and KGB agents, right?!
Russia is popular and known for being a communist country. After all, communists ruled Russia (Soviet Union) for over 70 years.
The questions you might be asking – is Russia still a communist country? Is Vladimir Putin a communist as well?
Scroll down to the bottom of this page to find out the answers.
History of Communism in Russia
For quite some time, Russia was ruled by the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Also known as the CPSU, it enjoyed a political monopoly over Russia.
The communist party was founded and later on led by Vladimir Lenin with the help of the Bolsheviks which was a major block of the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party.
It was founded on 1912 but came forth into power after the October Revolution that happened in 1917.
The CPSU ruled with democratic centralism as its idealism. Just as the name implies, it was a democratic idealism that also puts a premium on having an open forum when it comes to policies.
Of course, it followed the thought of communism by adhering to the ideology known as Marxism–Leninism. They then pursued the socialism of the state so all the industries in Russia were nationalized and they also implemented a planned economy.
What Was Life Like in the Soviet Union Under Communism?
I think the best way to understand what it was like to live in the communist Soviet Union is to see it.
Take a look at these pictures from the communist’s era.
The Fall of Communism – the End of the Era
In 1990, the Supreme Soviet negated the law that granted the CPSU the monopolistic hold of the political system of the nation. Soon enough, elements of the party started getting dissolved by bodies of the state.
As a result, the party played very little role in the affairs of the Soviet nation. As a party, it was dissolved a year after on August 29, 1991. It was on the same day when the communist party was banned.
I recommend you to watch this video which explains more about the collapse of the Soviet Union and communism.
Are There Still Communists in Russia?
Yes, communism is still alive in Russia. Barely. But it doesn’t mean that Russia is a communist country.
These days we have the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF) – they support the ideas of socialism based on the Chinese-style of governance. You can take a look at their website to read more about their program, ideas and etc.:)
Technically communists are the 2nd leading party in Russia – at the 2016 Russian legislative elections, CPRF placed right behind the party “United Russia”, which is supported by the
emperor President of Russia Vladimir Putin. But their numbers are very low – communists are only got 13.34% of votes, which is significantly lower than their result at previous elections (they were at 19.19% in 2012).
What we have at the end? With their 13%, communists are still hanging 2nd, but it will probably change at the next elections. The popularity of the communists in Russia is going down because they don’t have much support from the younger generation. Their votes are mostly coming from older people, who was born and lived in the Soviet Union.
On the other hand, there are more communist parties being established, like “Communists of Russia” or “Patriots of Russia”. These are very small parties and they don’t have many supporters, but they still exist. They want to bring back true communism as they denounce what they call the “old guard”.
Is Russia Communist Today Under Vladimir Putin?
The answer is simple – no, definitely not.
You might think that because Putin was a KGB officer early in his career. But it doesn’t mean anything, times changed.
To me, Vladimir Putin looks more like a monarch/”tsar”. I mean, I don’t see any reasons why would people think that Putin is a communist. Maybe you can share with me your opinion in the comments?! 🙂
He pretty much has an unlimited power in Russia, there is no other politic in the nation that stands anywhere near Putin. In my opinion, under Vladimir Putin, Russia is a capitalistic monarchy rather than a communist country.
At the end, let’s sum it all up.
Communism still exists in Russia and it’s a fact. However, these days it’s not the ruling political ideology. As of today, there are only 5 nations that are considered as communist countries and Russia is not one of them. China is the top communist country followed by North Korea, Cuba, Laos and Vietnam.
